Blending your new conservatory with the existing interior design

conservatory interior design yorkshire

The successful creation of a new conservatory involves careful consideration of many factors. There’s the size, shape and spec of the glass structure itself and making sure that the space is functional for your needs, right through to the aesthetics and the final flourish of the interior design.

Most homeowners prefer to blend their new conservatory with their existing property to create a cohesive, harmonious space. This can be done firstly through the external appearance of the structure, the materials used and the architectural design. But the choices you make about the interior of your new glass extension also have a big impact on how it blends with the rest of your home. You can even continue the seamless flow of your whole space out into your garden or patio through the clever use of design features.

Conservatory design for your Yorkshire home

Here at Solarlux by Reveal, we work closely with our customers in Yorkshire to fully understand their requirements at both a practical and aesthetic level. We’ll then find creative solutions for an all-glass conservatory design that fulfils their vision while at the same time integrating seamlessly with their house.

Before we look at the interior design, we consider exterior factors such as the scale and proportion of the glass extension in relation to the main property. This is important to maintain balance and to ensure the conservatory complements rather than overshadows the house. One of the great things about fully-glazed extensions is that their transparency gives them a light appearance that does not detract visually from the main property. For this reason, glass conservatory extensions can complement all styles of property, from minimalist, contemporary homes to rustic farmhouses and period properties.

Other ideas to help harmonise old and new exteriors are to choose materials and colours that are the same or similar.

The interior design of your new conservatory is just as important as its exterior in helping it blend with your house. Different elements can all combine to achieve a sense of one unified living space, as well as reflecting your personal style.

Take inspiration from your home’s existing furniture and furnishings to bring the new and old areas together, while creating a space that feels immediately familiar and comfortable. Equally, use colour in your new extension to link to the aesthetic of your home. Some people use white to bring the whole space together and act as a foundation for splashes of colour in the soft furnishings.

Let the view be the focus

One of the main attractions of an all-glass conservatory is the panoramic view it offers of your garden. When planning your interior design, therefore, try to make the most of this feature.

Keep the glass sides of your extension unobstructed, especially the one offering the best view. You want to be able to see that wonderful vista from any spot within your conservatory, including when you walk into the room. So keep it clutter free and use low, modest furniture.

Don’t detract attention away from the view by creating a focal point with your furnishings, furniture, lighting or use of colour. Instead, modest neutral tones work well. Or, for a more biophilic design, go for a natural colour palette that blends with the outdoors.

Immediately outside your conservatory, use minimal planting to allow the uninterrupted views to continue. Placing taller plants directly in line with your vision will only break the seamless flow from indoors to out.

Flooring

Flooring is one of the most effective ways of blending your new conservatory with your existing interior. Choose flooring for your new living space that’s the same or similar to your home to maintain cohesion throughout.

For an even greater effect, continue the same flooring out to your patio or decking as well. A flush or zero threshold on your bi-folds or sliding doors will complete the flow through the whole space.

Outside

Don’t forget your outdoor area, which is as much a part of your home as the rest of your property – and even more so if you have bi-folding doors or sliding doors. When open, they can fully blend your home with your garden or patio.

Your outside space can be as functional and aesthetically pleasing as the interior of your new conservatory, making it a true extension of your home.

Create contrast outside between dark and light. Use ground lights and spotlights to highlight focal points, for example a particular tree or a water feature. You could also place them around patios or steps to enhance certain areas and different levels.

Blend the interior of your new conservatory with your design choices outside. Continue the style of furniture you have indoors by choosing complementary outdoor seating and tables. Use cushions and throws to replicate or reflect your interior’s soft furnishings.

Inside your conservatory, houseplants can reflect your planting choices outside. If your garden is full of colour, continue this theme indoors, for example.

The beauty of an all-glass modern conservatory is that it uses advanced glazing and thermal technology to create an energy efficient space that’s useable all year round. This means you can enjoy wonderful views of your outside space from the comfort of your extension at all times of the year. Being able to see a continuation of your home in your garden creates the feeling of the whole space being as one.

Think about the size of your glass extension and its relation to your outside space. Try to create a balance between the two, where the placement and dimensions of trees, hedges and plants outdoors are in proportion to your new conservatory.
